一、阅读理解
1 A popular saying goes, \"Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.\" However, that's not really true. Words have the power to build us up or tear us down. It doesn't matter if the words come from someone's else or ourselves — the positive and negative effects are just as lasting.
We all talk to ourselves sometimes. We're usually too embarrassed to admit it, though. In fact, we really shouldn't be because more and more experts believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy habit.
This \"self-talk\" helps us motivate ourselves, remember things, solve problems, and calm Our-selves down. Be aware, though, that as much as 77% of self-talk tends to be negative. So in order to stay positive, we should only speak words of encouragement to ourselves. We should also be quick to give ourselves a pat on the back. The next time you finish a project, do well in a test, or finally clean your room, join me in saying \"Good job!\"
Often, words come out of our mouths without us thinking about the effect they will have. But we should be aware that our words cause certain responses in others. For example, when returning an item to a store, we might use warm, friendly language during the exchange. And the clerk will probably respond in
a similar manner. Or harsh(刻薄的) and critical language will most likely cause the clerk to be defensive.
Words possess power because of their lasting effect. Many of us regret something we once said. And we remember unkind words said to us! Before speaking, we should always ask ourselves: Is it loving? Is it needed? If what we want to say doesn't pass this test, then it's better left unsaid.
Words possess power both positive and negative. Those around us receive encouragement when we speak positively. We can offer hope, build self-esteem and motivate others to do their best. Negative words destroy all those things. Will we use our words to hurt or to heal? The choice is ours. 1.The main idea of the first paragraph is that ________. A.not sticks and stones but words will hurt us B.inspiring words give us confidence C.negative words may let us down D.words have a lasting effect on us

A.almost everybody has the habit of talking to themselves B.we can benefit from talking to ourselves C.talking to ourselves always gives us courage
D.it does no harm to have \"self-talk\" when we are alone
3.The underlined part in the third paragraph means that we should also timely
_______.
A.praise ourselves B.remind ourselves C.make ourselves relaxed D.give ourselves amusement
4.The author would probably hold the view that ___________. A.encouraging words are sure to lead to kind offers B.negative words may stimulate us to make more progress C.people tend to remember friendly words D.it is better to think twice before talking to others

3 An old gentleman who lives a few doors away from me can always be seen with a bag. He goes out by himself and picks up plastic bottles, plastic bags and pieces of paper everywhere. He does it all carefully and never complains. The children in the nearby school are probably responsible for some of that litter (废弃物). “There will come a time when they know better,” he said. “It’s just not yet. So, I’ll do it for them.”
Well, this morning I was out walking my neighbor’s dog when I saw another neighbor, a much younger man, out doing the same thing! He had his two little sons with him and they were having good fun trying to pick up the litter.
When I commented on what a good job he was doing, he said, “Well, an older fellow in our street does this. And my friend and I thought it wasn’t fair that he had to do it all the time, so now we take turns.”
Not only was he taking a turn, not only did he have a friend join in as well, but he was passing on the lesson to the next generation!
By the time I had returned the dog to my neighbor I looked again and his children’s friends had joined in!
This man was teaching a whole group of young children to keep their own street tidy. An older man had set an example for him and now he was passing it on — the next generation is doing what he did and the generation to come after that!

D.thought it unfair for the old man to do the cleaning alone 4.What can we learn from the text? A.No pains, no gains. B.Like father, like son.
C.The power of example is endless. D.Two heads are better than one. 4 Life is difficult.
What do you think about life? Maybe most people say that life is difficult. But life is no longer difficult once we truly understand and accept it. Most people do not fully see this truth. Instead, they complain about their problems and difficulties as if life should be easy. It seems to them that their difficulties represent a special kind of suffering especially forced upon (强加于) them or their families, their class, or even their nation.
What makes life difficult is that the process of facing and solving problems is a painful one. Problems, depending on their nature, cause us sadness or loneliness or regret or anger or fear. These are uncomfortable feelings, often as painful as any kind of physical pain. And since life causes an endless series of problems, life is always difficult and is full of pain as well as joy. Yet, it is in this whole process of solving problems that life has its meaning.
Problems are the serious test that tells success from failure. When we desire to encourage the growth of the human spirit, we encourage the human ability to solve problems, just as in school we set problems for our children to solve. It is through the pain of meeting and working out problems that we learn. As Benjamin Franklin said, “Those things that hurt instruct.” It is for
this reason that wise people learn not to fear but to welcome the pain of problems.

A.we become stronger by facing and solving the problems of life
B.life is difficult because our problems bring us pain C.people like to complain about their problems D.everybody has problems 二、七选五

Dear Tom,
In your email you asked about tea culture in China. Now I want to let you know of something about it.
Tea is native to China and Chinese tea culture has a long history. It plays an important part in Chinese culture. A great many famous poets and writers have written many works in appreciation of tea and about the love for it, among whom was Lu Yu in the Tang Dynasty, who wrote Cha Jing, the first book on tea and was regarded as the “Tea Saint”.
Tea is part of the Chinese’s daily life. Since ancient times, tea has been known as the “national drink” of China. Not only do the Chinese believe that having tea regularly can prolong life and benefit health, but modern science has also proved that tea is a natural health drink good for the body. I hope you can come to China to learn more about it.
Yours, Li Hua
