Anne Whitney, a sophomore(大学二年级学生)at Colorado State University, first had a problem taking tests when she began college.\"I was always well prepared for my tests. Sometimes I studied for weeks before a test.Yet I would go in to take the test, only to find I could not answer the questions correctly. I would blank out because of nervousness and fear. I couldn't think of the answer. My low grades on the tests did not show what I knew to the teacher.\" Another student in microbiology had similar experiences. He said ,\"My first chemistry test was very difficult. Then, on the second test, I sat down to take it, and I was so nervous that I was shaking. My hands were moving up and down so quickly that it was hard to hold my pencil. I knew the material and I knew the answers.Yet I couldn't even write them down!\"
These two young students were experiencing something called test anxiety. When a student feels worried and uneasy about a test, his or her mind does not work as well as it usually does. The student can't write or think clearly because of the extreme tension and nervousness. Although poor grades are often a result of poor study habits, sometimes test anxiety causes the low grades. Recently test anxiety had been recognized as a real problem, not just an excuse or a false explanation of lazy students.
Special university counseling(咨询) courses try to help students. In these courses, counselors try to help students by teaching them how to manage test anxiety. At some universities, students take tests to measure their anxiety. If the tests show their anxiety is high, the students can take short courses to help them deal with their tension. These courses teach students how to relax their bodies. Students are trained to bee calm in very tense situations.By controlling their nervousness, they can let their minds work at ease. Learned information then es out without difficulty on a test.
Martin Smith, an expert at the University of California explains.”With almost all students, relaxation and less stress are felt after taking out program. Most of them experience better control during their tests. Almost all have some improvement. With some, the improvement is very great.”

Andy is the most unreasonable, pigheaded life form in the world, and he makes me so angry that I could scream! Of course, I love him like a brother. I have to because he is my brother. More than that, he is my twin! That’s right. Andy and Amy(that’s me) have the same curly(卷曲的) hair and dark eyes and equally stubborn character. Yet, though we may look alike, on most issues we usually hold pletely opposite opinions. If I say day, you can count on Andy to say night.
Just this week, the hot topic in school was all about the PTA’S proposal(提议) to adopt a school dress principle. Every student would be required to wear a uniform. Uniforms! Can you imagine? Oh, they would be uniforms in color. The dress style would be sort of loose and free. Boys would wear white or blue button-down shirts, a school tie, blue or gray pants, and a navy blue blazer(运动夹克). Girls would wear white or blue blouses or sweater, blue or gray pants or skirts, along with a navy blue blazer.
I think a dress principle is a good idea. The reason is simple. School is tough enough without worrying about looking cool every single day. The fact is, the less I have to decide first thing in the morning, the better. I can’t tell you how many mornings I look into my closet and just stare , unable to decide what to wear. Of course, there are other mornings when my room looks like a storm-hit place, with bits and pieces of a dozen different possible clothes on the bed and on the floor. I also wouldn’t mind not having to see guys wearing oversized jeans and shirts. And I certainly wouldn’t mind not seeing kids showing off designer clothes.
Andy is surprised at my opinion. He says he can’t believe that I would be willing to give up my all-American teenage birthright by dressing like — well, like a typical teenager. Last night, he even dragged out Mom and Dad’s high school photo albums. What a couple of peace-loving hippies(嬉皮士) they were!
“If I have to wear a uniform, I won’t feel like me!” he declared, to which I replied, “I feel sorry for you, dear brother. I had no idea that you are so fragile(脆弱的)that you would be pletely
destroyed by gray or blue pants, a white or blue shirt, a tie, and a blazer.
That really made him angry. Then he said, “You’re just copying what that new music teacher is saying!
That is not true. I’m saying exactly what I think,” I said, raising my voice in what mom would call “ a very rude manner.”
“You have always been stupid, and you know it!” he shouted.
“Is that so? Anyone who doesn’t agree with you is stupid. And that’s the stupidest thing of all!” I said.
Fortunately, the bell rang before we could do each other physical harm, and we went thankfully to our separate classes.
The vote for or against uniforms took place later that day. The results of the vote and the headmaster’s decision will be announced next week. I wonder what it will be. I know how I voted, and I’m pretty sure I know how Andy voted. How would you vote—for or against?
70. The passage is probably about _______. A. conflicts of the twins
B. a pensonal experience told in the third person C. a joke told in the first person D. a dress principle being discussed
71. Amy and Andy often quarrel with each other because ______. A. they're twins
B. they like different teachers
C. they always hold different views D. they don't like each other very much
72. Amy’s opinion on school uniforms is most likely based on _______. A. her dislike of anything her brother likes B. her preference for designer clothes
C. an emotional reaction to other’s opinions D. her own observation and personal experience
73. Which of the following is the best statement of Andy’s opinion? A. School clothing should show parents’ values. B. What he wears shows what he is.
C. Teenagers could never follow the latest fashions in dress. D. Wearing school uniforms means less trouble every morning.
74. By saying the underlined sentence, Amy aims to show that ______. A. Andy shouldn't show me Mom and Dad’s high school photo albums. B. Our clothes should decide people's attitudes towards us. C. Andy's lack of self-confidence is shown in his clothing.
D. Our clothes shouldn't determine how we feel about ourselves. 75. What is the best title for the passage?
A. A Vote on the School Dress Principle. B. My Devoted Twin Brother and I C. The Deep Love Between the Twins D. For or Against?--That Is the Question
第二节:下面文章中有5处需要添加小标题(第76--80题)。请从以下选项(A. B. C. D. E和F)中选出适合各段落意思的小标题。选项中有一项是多余选项。
A. Exercise
B. Take Time to think carefully C. Read Challenging Books
D. Open Your Mind for New Ideas E. Reduce Television Watching Time F. Early to Bed, Early to Rise
Five Simple Ways to Increase Your Intelligence
Your brain needs exercise just like a muscle. If you use it often and in the right ways, you will bee a more skilled thinker and increase your ability to focus. But if you never use your brain, or use it wrongly, your ability to think and learn will lose. Here are 5 simple ways anyone can squeeze(挤出) a bit more productivity out of the old gray matter. 76._____________
People love staying in front of the television, myself included. The problem is watching television doesn’t use your mental ability or allow it to recharge. It’s like having the energy taken away from a muscle without the health benefits of exercise.
When you feel like relaxing, try reading a book instead. If you’re too tired, listen to some music. All of these things use your mind more than television and allow you to relax.
77._____________
I used to think that I’d learn more by not exercising and using the time to read a book instead. But I realized that time spent exercising always leads to greater learning because it improves productivity during the time afterwards. Using your body clears your head and makes your mind ready for new ideas. 78._____________
Many people like to read popular suspense fiction(悬疑小说), but generally these books aren’t mentally encouraging. If you want to improve your thinking and writing ability you should read books that make you focus. Reading a classic novel can change your view of the world and will make you think positively. Don’t be afraid to look up a word if you don’t know it, and don’t be afraid of long passages. Take your time, reread when necessary, and you’ll soon get used to the author’s style.
79______________
Nothing makes it harder for you to concentrate than sleep deprivation (丧失). You’ll be most energetic if you go to bed early and don’t sleep more than 8 hours. If you stay up late, you’ll have trouble focusing. In my experience the early morning hours are the most productive. Waking up early gives you more productive hours and maximizes (使……最大化)your mental sharpness all day. 80._____________
Often our lives get so busy that we are at a loss.It bees difficult to concentrate. Spending some time alone in deep thoughts gives you a chance to organize your mind. Afterwards, you’ll have a better understanding of what’s important and what isn’t. The unimportant things won’t bother you any more and your mind will feel less loaded. One of my personal favorites is taking a walk alone. Someone famous said, “All the best ideas occur while walking.” I think he was on to
something.

W: The price of a Chinese table of dishes ranges from $100 to $500, not including drinks. M: I would prefer the highest price.
W: OK, are there any particular dishes you'd like to order?
M: No, I will leave it all to you. I think we would like to have typical Chinese dishes. W: No problem Text 7
W: You’ve packed so many clothes, Ben!
M: Well, it is business trip, and the weather will be different everywhere I go. W: I suppose on Sunday you’ll travel in your jeans.
M: Yes. Then on Monday I’m going to meet the pany boss, so I’ll need my suit then. I can’t wear jeans.
W: What is happening on Tuesday?
M: I’m visiting a factory in the south, so I’ve packed these grey trousers. They’re light and I won’t need a jacket. It’ll be 35 degrees.
W: Oh! Then you’re in the mountains on Wednesday.
M: Yes. A jacket won’t be warm enough. I’ve got my coat for that day. W: Are you taking a sweater as well?
M: There isn’t room in the suitcase. On Thursday I’ll be by the sea where we spent our honeymoon, so I’m taking my swim shorts. W: And what about Friday?
M: I’m having lunch with some colleagues. I’ll wear that blue short you bought me. Look, here it
is, under the suit. W. Oh, good. Text 8
W: Oh, no, Gregory! I pletely forgot what today is.
M: What day is it today, Emily? I thought it was just a regular Thursday.
W: Well, it is Thursday. But today is School Spirit Day! I don’t have my school sweater with me. I was really looking forward to it.
M: Oh, that’s right! I think I might have an extra one, though. Do you want to go to my cupboard with me and take a look?
W: If you have an extra one, that would be great. My science teacher said that if we all wore our school sweaters today, we would earn a prize.
M: Here is my cupboard. And it looks like I do have an extra sweater! It may be a little big on you, but it will still do.
W: Thank you so much, Gregory! I was spending so much time getting ready for your birthday party tomorrow that I forgot to bring mine this morning. M: Oh, no! I forgot that tomorrow is my birthday! W: Ha-ha! How did you forget your own birthday? Text 9
M: Raul, this is the worse vacatin that we have ever been on. First, we missed our fight and had to pay$200 for new tickets. Then, you forget to make reservation at the hotel, and now we are all alone here on this stupid island because you had to go off swimming alone. Why couldn’t you just stay close to the boat like you were supposed to?
M: Henry, you know that sharks are my favorite animals. I couldn’t just stay near the boat and look at stupid colorful fish when I knew that there were sharks swimming around out there, just waiting to be found.
W: Well, you’ve certainly done it now, haven’t you? We can’t even leave this island without one of them biting off our arms. How are we supposed to get home now? What about the kids? We left them with your parents. God knows how fat and spoiled they will get if we leave them there. We have to get back home.
M: Listen, it’s all going to be okay, honey. I have a plan. I’m going to use this watch to make a mirror and attract the attention of a helicoppter.
W: Helicopter? What helicopter? We are doomed…doomed. I tell you. Text 10
Mrs. Wilson invited some friends for lunch. She was eager to try a new way of cooking a fish dish, and she was very pleased with herself when the dish was ready. Because the dish was hot, she put it near the window to cool for a few minutes. When she came back for it, she was surprised to find the neighbor’s cat by the dish. Fortunately, she came in time to stop the cat. That afternon was a great success and they talked and laughted till 4 o’clock. At the end of the afternoon, when she was alone again, she felt tired but happy. She was sitting near the window when she was frightened to see her neighbour carrying the cat, dead. What had happened to her friend’s cat? She at once called the family doctor. He told her to phone each of her visitors to meet him. Just as she sat down, the telephone rang. It was her neighbour, “My cat was killed by a car.”
