FunctionofquestionsQuestionsaremostcommonlyaskedinordertoelicitinformation.Theanswergivenbythecoacheefrequentlyindicatetothecoachthelinetofollowwithsubsequentquestions.Whileatthesametimeenablinghimtomonitorwhetherthecoacheeisfollowingaproductivetrack,oronethatisinlinewiththepurposeorcompanyobjectives.
FocusondetailQuestionsshouldbeginbroadandincreasinglyfocusondetail.Thedemandformoredetailmaintainsthefocusandtheinterestoftheperformer.
eg.Lookingatasquarefootofcarpet,afterobservingthepile,colour,pattern,perhapsaspotorastain,thecarpetwillholdlittlefurtherinterestfprtheobserverandhisattentionwillbetowandertomoreinterestingthings.
Thecoachneedstoprobedeeperorformoredetailtokeepthecoacheeinvolvedandtobringintohisconsciousnessthoseofternpartiallyobscuredfactorsthatmaybeimportant.
AreaofinterestParadoxicallyitmaybevaluableforthecoachtofocusuponanyaspectthatthecoacheeappearstobeavoiding.Soasnottobreakthetrustandresponsibilityofcoachee.BlindSpotsOpenQuestionsOpenquestionrequiresdescriptiveanswerspromoteawareness
Closedquestionsaretooabsoluteforaccuracy,andYesandNoanswersclosethedoorontheexplorationoffurtherdetail.
OpenquestionsaremuchmoreeffectiveforgeneratingAWARENESSandRESPONSIBILITYincoachingprocess.
