The Truth Can Set You Free

I recently got pulled over for speeding not far from my new home in Virginia. I hadn’t been paying attention, and I had driven a few miles an hour over the speed limit.

“Can I see your license and registration?” the police officer asked me. I pulled both out for him,and he saw my Pittsburgh address on my Pennsylvania driver’s license.

“What are you doing here?” he asked. “Are you with the army?”

“No, I’m not,” I answered. I explained that I had just moved to Virginia, and I hadn’t had time to reregister yet.

“So what brings you here?”

He had asked a direct question. Without thinking very hard, I gave him a direct answer. “Well, officer,” I said, “since you’ve asked, I have cancer. I have just months to live. We’ve moved down here to be close to my wife’s family.”

“So you’ve got cancer,” he said flatly. He was trying to figure me out. Was I really dying? Was I lying? He took a long look at me. “You know, for a guy who has only a few months to live, you sure look good.” He was obviously thinking: “Either this guy is pulling one big fat lie on me, or he’s telling the truth.” He was trying to question my honesty without directly calling me a liar. And so he had forced me to prove that I was being honest.

‘‘Well, officer, I know that I look pretty healthy. I look great on the outside, but the tumors (肿瘤) are on the inside. ”And then, I don’t know what possessed me, but I just did it. I pulled up my shirt, showing the operational scars.

He looked at my scars. He looked in my eyes. He now knew he was talking to a dying man. Well, he wasn’t taking this any further. He handed me back my license. “Do me a favor,” he said, “Slow down from now on.”

The awful truth had set me free. As he went back to his police car, I had a realization. I had been one of those gorgeous blondes (金发美女) who could bat her eyelashes and get out of tickets. I drove home under the speed limit, and I was smiling like a beauty queen.

Life in the Clear

Transparent animals let light pass through their bodies the same way light passes through a window. These animals typically live between the surface of the ocean and a depth of about 3,300 feet---as far as most light can reach. Most of them are extremely delicate and can be damaged by a simple touch. Sonke Johnsen, a scientist in biology, says, “These animals live through their life alone. They never touch anything unless they’re eating it, or unless something is eating them.”

And they are as clear as glass. How does an animal become see-through? It s trickier than you might think.

The objects around you are visible because they interact with light. Light typically travels in a straight line. But some materials slow and scatter (散射) light, bouncing it away from its original path. Others absorb light, stopping it dead in its tracks. Both scattering and absorption make an object look different from other objects around it, so you can see it easily.

But a transparent object doesn’t absorb or scatter light, at least not very much. Light can pass through it without bending or stopping. That means a transparent object doesn’t look very different from the surrounding air or water. You don’t see it you see the things behind it.

To become transparent, an animal needs to keep its body from absorbing or scattering light. Living materials can stop light because they contain pigments (色素) that absorb specific colors of light. But a transparent animal doesn’t have pigments, so its tissues won’t absorb light. According to Johnsen, avoiding absorption is actually easy. The real challenge is preventing light from scattering.

Animals are built of many different materials---skin, fat, and more---and light moves through each at a different speed. Every time light moves into a material with a new speed, it bends and scatters. Transparent animals use different tricks to fight scattering. Some animals are simply very small or extremely flat. Without much tissue to scatter light, it is easier to be see-through. Others build a large, clear mass of non-living jelly-like (果冻状的) material and spread themselves over it.

Larger transparent animals have the biggest challenge, because they have to make all the different tissues in their bodies slow down light exactly as much as water does. They need to look uniform. But how they’re doing it is still unknown. One thing is clear: for these larger animals, staying transparent is an active process. When they die, they turn a non-transparent milky white. 28. According to Paragraph 1,transparent animals . A. stay in groups

B. can be easily damaged

D. are beautiful creatures

C. appear only in deep ocean

29. The underlined word “dead” in Paragraph 3 means . A. silently

B. gradually

C. regularly

D. completely

30. One way for an animal to become transparent is to . A. change the direction of light travel scatter light

C. avoid the absorption of light light

31. The last paragraph tells us that larger transparent animals . A. move more slowly in deep water death

C. produce more tissues for their survival to reduce light spreading

D

Robinson Crusoe is a famous novel written by Daniel Defoe. The book tells the story of a man who is shipwrecked (遭遇海难的). He spends 28 years on an island near Venezuela. The book tells the story of everything that happens to Robinson Crusoe. He hopes someone will rescue him, but he has been there for so long on his own that he also begins to fear being rescued.

Robinson Crusoe was published in 1719. Most experts believe the story is based on the life of Alexander Selkirk, who was a Scottish sailor. On an expedition (探险) in 1704, Selkirk had an argument with his ship’s captain. Selkirk thought the

D. take effective action

B. stay see-through even after

D. grow bigger to stop

B. gather materials to

ship was not safe and was about to fall apart.

When the ship stopped at a remote island to get fresh water? Selkirk got off. He tried to get the other crew members to leave with him, but nobody would. The ship then sailed away without him. Selkirk spent four years and four months on his own on the island, known as Aguas Buenas.

Selkirk was finally rescued by a ship that visited the island in 1709. The ship’s captain was grateful to Selkirk because he provided food for the crew when they arrived.

Now archaeologists think they have found the remains of Selkirk’s camp on Aguas Buenas. They found two deep holes that would have held wooden posts. The archaeologists say this is evidence that Selkirk built a shelter there. The post holes are near a fresh water stream. They are located quite high up, which would have meant that Selkirk was able to watch out for the ships coming close to the island.

The most interesting evidence, the archaeologists say, is part of a piece of equipment used by sailors to navigate (导航). Historians believe Selkirk was a navigator, so the instrument could have belonged to him.

Robinson Crusoe was published ten years after Selkirk was rescued. Most experts think Daniel Defoe heard and read stories about Selkirk, which inspired him to write the book.

32. Why did Selkirk choose to land on the remote island? A. Because he had quarrels with the crew members. B. Because the captain ordered him to get fresh water. C. Because he wanted to go on an adventure there. D. Because he thought the ship he was on was in danger.

33. We can infer from the text that the ship that visited Aguas Buenas in 1709 . A. lost its way while sailing arrival

C. was being navigated by Selkirk upon arrival

34. How could Selkirk see ships that might rescue him, according to archaeologists?

D. was running out of food

B. lacked fresh water upon

A. By asking the crew members on the ships. B. By sending messages to the ships’ captains. C. By watching from his shelter high on the island. D. By using a piece of equipment used to navigate. 35. The author wrote the text to . A. explain the origin of Robinson Crusoe Robinson Crusoe

C. criticise Alexander Selkirk’s deeds his writing inspiration

Fast food

Fast food is becoming more and more popular in China, especially among children and teenagers.

There are several reasons for its popularity. First, it is very convenient and saves a lot of time. Second, you can either eat it there or take it away. Third, the environment of fast food restaurants is both clean and comfortable. However, in terms of nutrition, fast food is far from satisfactory. It is usually not a balanced diet and low in nutritional value.

Fast food is only a good choice when you are in a hurry and turn to it once in a while. It’s good for people, especially children, to eat fast food as little as possible.
