Writing Task 2

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic:

Nowadays we are producing more and more rubbish. Why do you think this is happening? What can governments do to

reduce the amount of rubbish produced?

It is true that in almost every country today each family produces a large amount of waste every week. Most of the

rubbish comes from the packaging of the things we buy, such as processed food. However, even if we buy food without

packaging, we still produce rubbish from the plastic bags that are used everywhere.

The first reason why we have so much packaging is that we consume so much more every day than families did in the

past. Also, convenience is very important in modern life; therefore, we buy

packaged food that can be transported

over long distances and store it until we need it, at first in the supermarket, then at home.

Further, the amount of waste produced is also a result of our habit of using something once and throw it away. We

forget that even the cheapest plastic bag has used valuable resources and energy. Above all, we also forget that it

is a source of pollution and difficult to deal with.

Therefore, I think that governments need to raise this awareness in the general public. Children should be educated

about environmental issues at school while adults need to take action. Governments can encourage such action by

collecting taxes on packaging, such as plastic bags and fining families and shops that do not try to recycle their

waste.
