Qian Xuesen: China's Rocket Man

Qian Xuesen was a Really Smart Guy
Hi everyone! Today I want to tell you about Qian Xuesen. He was a super smart scientist and engineer from China. Let me start from the beginning.
Qian Xuesen was born in 1911 in Hangzhou. That's a beautiful city with a big lake and lots of historical buildings and gardens. When he was young, Qian loved studying math and science. He was such a bright kid that he got to go study aerospace engineering at great universities like MIT and Caltech in the United States.
While Qian was in America, some bad stuff happened in World War 2. A lot of people were worried that scientists like Qian, who knew about rockets and jets, might share that knowledge with other countries to make powerful weapons. Even though Qian said he would never do that, the US government didn't trust him just because he was Chinese. In 1950, they accused him of being a communist spy! That was totally unfair.
Qian had to go to prison for 5 years, which is a really long time for a kid like me. Can you imagine being stuck in jail when you didn't even do anything wrong? I would be so bored and sad. Qian must have been very brave. Finally in 1955, the US let him leave America, but he couldn't come back.
So Qian went back to China and got right to work. He was determined to make his homeland stronger in science and technology after being treated so poorly abroad. Qian helped start important research institutes and universities. He trained thousands of students and directed major projects. Qian's work allowed China to make its first missiles, satellites, and finally human spaceflights!
Qian became known as the Father of Chinese Rocketry. I think that's such a cool title! He received the two highest honors in China - the Two Bombs, One Satellite Achievement Medal and the great title of National Honored Scientist. Basically, he was like Neil Armstrong and Albert Einstein combined for the Chinese people.

Qian Xuesen was born in 1911 in Hangzhou, China. Even as a young kid, he was really smart and good at math and science. His parents encouraged his interests and he went on to study aerospace engineering. He was such a talented student that in 1935 he got the chance to go study in the United States.
In America, Qian went to study at the California Institute of Technology, which is one of the best science schools. He worked really hard and made several breakthroughs in rocket science. His teacher, the famous scientist Theodore von Karman, was very impressed with Qian's abilities.
During World War 2, Qian helped develop rocket
technologies for the US military. After the war ended in 1945, he applied to become an American citizen. But at this time, there was a lot of suspicion and fear about communism spreading. Even though Qian wasn't a communist, the American
government accused him of sharing rocket secrets with China. They threw him in prison!
For 5 long years from 1950 to 1955, poor Qian was locked up. He insisted he was innocent but no one would listen. It was a very difficult time for him and his family. I can't even imagine
how upsetting that must have been. Finally in 1955, Qian was released and allowed to go back to China.
When Qian returned home, he was welcomed as a hero. The Chinese leaders were so impressed by his scientific mind that they put him in charge of developing China's missile and space program. Under his guidance, China was able to launch its first missile in 1960 and first satellite in 1970. These were huge achievements!
Qian didn't just work on rockets though. He also made contributions to other areas like mathematics, mechanics, and engineering. He helped train and mentor many students who went on to become accomplished scientists themselves. Qian showed that Chinese people could absolutely excel at the highest levels of science.

He was such a good student that he got to study in the United States at places like MIT and Caltech. While living in America, Dr. Qian became an expert on rocket science and helped create early rockets and missiles.
During World War II, Dr. Qian worked on rockets for the U.S. military. His work was very important and top secret. After the war ended in 1945, Dr. Qian wanted to return home to China. But the American government wouldn't let him leave because they were afraid he would share rocket secrets with the Chinese government. Dr. Qian was forced to remain in the U.S. for many years.

During World War 2, Qian helped design cool rocket stuff for the U.S. military. After the war, he wanted to go back home to China. But the American government didn't want him to leave because he knew too many secrets! They kept him in a house on an island for 5 years! That must have been really boring. Finally in 1955, Qian was allowed to go back to China. The Chinese government was so happy to have him. They put him in charge of their rocket program. With Qian's smarts, China was able to launch its first missile in 1960 and its first satellite in 1970! Isn't that amazing?
