Big Campus Clean-up Day!

Wow, what an exciting day it was last Saturday! Our whole school had a huge campus clean-up event and I got to be a part of it. I've always loved being outside and getting my hands dirty, so this was right up my alley.

It all started a couple weeks ago when our teacher, Mrs. Johnson, told the class that we were going to have a special clean-up day to spruce up the school grounds. She said it was important to take care of our campus and keep it looking beautiful. I got really excited because I love doing projects like this!

Mrs. Johnson split us into teams and gave each team an area to focus on. My best friend Michael and I were on the

playground crew. We were in charge of cleaning up all the mulch areas under the swing sets and slides. Other teams had jobs like picking up litter around the soccer fields, pulling weeds from the garden beds, and sweeping off the sidewalks and basketball courts. It was a huge job but we had a ton of kids helping out. Bright and early Saturday morning, I hopped out of bed, put on my grubbiest clothes, and grabbed my favorite work gloves.

My mom packed me a big lunch and some ice cold lemonade to keep me hydrated. I could hardly eat breakfast I was so pumped up!

When I got to school, there were already dozens of kids there ready to get started. Parents and teachers were there too, making sure we had all the supplies we needed like rakes, shovels, buckets and trash bags. After some opening instructions from the principal, the whistle blew and we were off!

Michael and I raced over to the playground area hauling our giant bags of fresh cedar mulch. We got to work right away, shoveling out all the old, dirty mulch and dumping it into a huge trailer to be hauled away. My arms got so tired from all that shoveling and hauling, but I didn't mind one bit. I was having a blast!

Once we'd cleared out all the old stuff, we spread the new bright reddish-brown mulch out evenly across the whole area. We used rakes and our hands to make sure it looked perfect. I could already tell it was going to look awesome when we were finished.

Around lunchtime, we all took a break to refuel. I chugged down my whole bottle of lemonade because I was crazy thirsty from working so hard in the warm sun. The pizza and snacks my

mom packed tasted extra delicious since I had worked up such an appetite.

After lunch, Michael and I switched jobs and went to help some other teams. We spent a couple hours picking up litter that had accumulated in the trees and bushes around the edges of the campus. It was crazy how much trash we found! Bottles, wrappers, random pieces of paper and plastic - you name it, it was out there. We used those long grabbing stick things to reach way back into the bushes and pluck out every last grungy thing. I couldn't believe how much prettier the school looked already. The gardens had no weeds poking through, the sidewalks were sparkling clean, and the fields were clear of debris. But we still had a few more jobs to do in the afternoon. The last area Michael and I helped with was sweeping up all the outdoor basketball courts and rinsing them off with the hose. We made sure to get every last speck of dirt and dust out of all the cracks and crevices. By the time we were done, those courts were looking brand spankin' new!

Finally, around 4pm, the final whistle blew marking the end of our workday. As I looked around at our whole group's hard work, I felt such a huge sense of pride and accomplishment. Our campus looked absolutely incredible! The gardens were neat and

tidy, the mulched areas looked fresh and bright, and there wasn't a single piece of litter to be seen anywhere. We had worked our tails off but it was all worth it.

All the kids lined up to return tools and get popsicles as a celebratory treat. Covered in dirt with twigs in my hair, I shakily raised my popsicle in the air with one exhausted arm and gave Mrs. Johnson a giant smile. She gave me a wink to say \"Great job!\"

On Monday when we came back to school, it was hard not to just stop and stare in awe at how beautiful our grounds looked. Normally I would run straight to the playground, but I actually slowed down for once so I could admire all our hard work. It felt so good knowing that we were the ones who made it look that way.

I learned a lot from that experience. First, taking care of your environment is so important - for it to look nice but also to keep litter and waste under control. Second, teamwork and pitching in together is crucial for big jobs like that. We never could have done it alone, but with everyone's help it got done in a flash. And finally, hard work really does pay off because putting in that much effort gave us such an incredible sense of accomplishment.

I already can't wait for next year's clean-up day! Hopefully we can make it an annual tradition because keeping our school looking beautiful should definitely be a priority. I'll be first in line with my gloves and shovel ready to go. Our campus is our home away from home and we should take pride in keeping it perfect. After all, we're the ones who get to enjoy it!
