1. Should Free Music Downloads Be Banned?

With the development of technology, more and more people are making use of the Internet and are enjoying downloading all types of materials. Some are especially fond of downloading free music. They argue that free music downloads not only enrich our life, but also are good for the music industry because they help increase the popularity of music.

However, from my point of view, it is not advisable to allow free music downloads. For one thing, they violate the intellectual property rights of musicians. For another, they have a negative impact on the sales of musical products such as CDs, which may do harm to the whole music industry. Without good returns, who would like to invest in the music industry?

In order that the music industry can develop healthily, we had better ban free music downloads. Let’s start to do so with ourselves.

2. On TV Show

Nowadays, TV shows are very popular. TV programs like Super Girls and

Dreams in China have attracted thousands of people to participate and many more

want to watch them when they are on show.

Why are so many people interested in such programs? Advocates say that these programs provide excellent opportunities for young people to express themselves and to show their specialty. They help improve their self-confidence and can add to their courage to face all kinds of challenges.

However, some people criticize these programs, arguing that they are not only a waste of energy, money and time, but also a revelation of social vanity.

In my opinion, we need not to be too critical about such TV programs. If they can bring happiness to those who participate in them as well as to the audience, they are justifiably entitled to prosper.

3. On Students Dealing in Stocks

When many people make a fortune in the stock market, a great number of university students follow their steps and get involved in dealing in stocks, too. They deal in stocks in their free time, trying to earn some money and gain some experience in managing properties.

Most people accept this understandingly. They say dealing in stocks provides the students an opportunity to combine what they have learnt in school with practice. However, there are also people who take a negative view on this. They argue that dealing in stocks will not only take much of the students’ energy and time, but it will also make huge economic risks. When huge losses occur, they may lead to disastrous results.

As for me, I think university students must be discouraged to deal in stocks, since campus life is not yet ready for the turbulent stock market.

4. Should English Classes Be Compulsory for Students

Most universities in China have made English a compulsory course, which has aroused many complaints among students. Many students wish that English could be removed from the list of compulsory courses.

However, I think it is of great significance for all university students to study English. To begin with, as an international language, English is widely used. Today, university students must master the language if they are to communicate with foreigners and to participate in the fierce competition in the future. In addition, studying English as a foreign language does not only provide students with a useful tool for communication, but also open a door to cultures different from our own. As is universally acknowledged, mutual understanding among different cultures is vital for keeping the world safe and peaceful.

Therefore, I strongly recommend that all students take advantage of the compulsory course, and try to study English well.

5. Fast Food

Fast food has been increasingly popular in our life. For one thing, more fast food restaurants, both Chinese and western style, appear in the street. For another, more customers welcome fast food. Several years ago, only the young went to Macdonald’s, but now people of all ages rush to fast food restaurants.

The popularity of fast food apparently relates to the fast pace of modern life. Office workers have to turn to fast food because of their short lunchtime. Some families, with both husband and wife working full time, cannot afford the time to cook, so they choose it, too.

However, evidence shows that fast food lacks nutrition, and if we eat only fast food, it is surely bad for our health.

Therefore, I think, for convenience’s sake, we need fast food. But if we want to keep in good health, we should try our best to cook for ourselves.

6. On Students Quitting School

Many college students have quitted school in recent years. They do it for different reasons.

Some students quit school because of their poor health. A serious disease or a traffic accident may have made it impossible for them to continue their schooling. Other students may be forced to do it because their family couldn’t afford the tuition.

However, there are some students who quit school out of their own choice. Some embrace a good job offer and leave school. Others may find that they cannot afford to loss the good opportunity to start their own business, so they quit school to start their career just like Bill gates.

Whatever the reason, I think college students should think twice before deciding to quit school. After all, graduates are normally better prepared for their future than those who quit school. College education pays off in the long run.

7. Should Students Follow Fashions

Young university students are sensible to fashions. Some are keen on following fashions: they use mobile phones of the latest style; they wear stylish clothes; they enjoy popular music.

Some people are not happy with this phenomenon. They argue that university students should focus on studies rather than on fashions. They say fashions cost so much that university students cannot afford them. Some students follow fashions crazily, for fear of losing face. Fashions have caused much trouble on campus.

However, others may hold different opinions. They say fashions can drive students to work harder for a better life and broaden their horizons, which is essential for their future development.

I understand those students who follow fashions, but they must be responsible and not go to extremes. If their family is poor, there is no need for them to have such luxurious hobbies.

8. A Letter to the University President

Dear Mr. President,

I’m a sophomore majoring in Law. I’m writing to make suggestions on improving the education quality of our university.

First, I think there is still much room for improvement concerning our classroom education. Some teachers just recite textbooks and their courses are boring. It’s not very much helpful for us. We need more interaction and communication in classes, and we welcome more lively and practical courses.

Second, we students need help to develop our initiative in our study. I hope our university can invite some famous people to deliver lectures to us on how to study.

Finally, in order to get all students involved in our studies, I suggest some contests be held in the university. For example, the Department of Law can have legal knowledge contests.

Thank you for reading my letter. I hope my suggestions will be seriously looked to.

Yours sincerely,

Li Ming

9. Grades and Ability

Do high grades imply excellent ability? Opinions vary from person to person.

Some agree that high grades reflect high intelligence and are thus indicative of one’s ability. Students who do well in exams are therefore always favored in class. Others hold that grades have little to do with one’s ability. They point out that some students who do not work well in school may also make great achievements. They take Edison for example, saying that Edison was considered not clever by his primary school teacher, but became a very famous inventor later.

In my view, grades are important for us students. When people have no other ways to assess our ability, they can decide whether we are qualified for a school place or a position only from our grades. Therefore, we must try to achieve high

grades in school, even though they are not the only standard for our ability.
