My Hometown: Shantou and the Chaoshan Region
Hi, my name is Xiaoming and I'm going to tell you all about my awesome hometown of Shantou and the larger Chaoshan region where I was born and raised. Shantou is a city in the eastern part of Guangdong Province in southern China. It's right on the coast and has a really neat harbor with tons of ships coming and going. The weather is usually pretty warm and sunny which I love!
Shantou is part of the Chaoshan region, which covers a few cities in eastern Guangdong. We have our own unique Chaoshan culture, language, food, and customs that make us special. The Chaoshan people are known for being hardworking,
entrepreneurial, and good at business. A lot of overseas Chinese, especially in Southeast Asia, have Chaoshan roots.
One thing that makes Chaoshan really cool is our language - Chaozhou dialect. It sounds super different from Mandarin or Cantonese. To me, it has a very musical and almost singing type of sound. At home, my parents always speak to me in Chaozhou dialect. When I'm out, I hear it all over the place from
shopkeepers, on the streets, everywhere! I'm really proud of our dialect.
Chaoshan is also famous for its amazing food! We have so many tasty and unique dishes. My favorite is definitely Chaozhou beef ball noodles. The beef balls are so bouncy and flavorful, and the broth is out of this world. I could eat it every day and never get tired of it! Other must-try Chaoshan dishes are Chaozhou wontons, oyster omelette, and pu'er dumplings. Our snacks are awesome too, like wawan pastries, sachima, and gongzai. Making me hungry just thinking about it all!
Speaking of food, my favorite holiday in Chaoshan is the Spring Cowherding Festival. During this festival, families get together and eat lots of delicious cowherding foods like rice dumplings, mugwort pudding, and fried twisted dough. It's a way to celebrate the coming of spring after winter. There are also dragon boat races, operas, and other fun activities during the festival.
Culturally, Chaoshan has its own folk arts and traditions that have been passed down for generations. Things like Chaozhou woodcarving, hand puppet shows, operas, and paper umbrellas are all famous examples of our folk arts. I really enjoy watching
the hand puppet shows, which act out funny stories with the puppeteers providing all the sound effects and voices.
One more thing that's awesome about my hometown is all the cool historic sites and parks. The ancient Guangdong Gate towers in central Shantou date back to the Song Dynasty like 800 years ago! They used to be part of the old city walls. Then there are places like Queshi Scenic Area, Nan'ao Island, and Shantou University, which all have beautiful nature scenery and gardens to explore.
As you can probably tell, I absolutely love being from Shantou and the Chaoshan region. The unique language, incredible food, rich culture, fun festivals, and history everywhere you look make it such a vibrant and special place. I'm so grateful to have been raised in this environment and hope I was able to give you a little taste of what makes my hometown so incredible. Thanks for reading and come visit Chaoshan someday!
