Reexamination
1. Would you like to say something about your university?
Sure. I would graduate from Qufu Normal University in June. It’s a normal university with a history of 58 years. Its old campus is located in the hometown of the great ancient educationist “Confucious” and the new one was set up in 2002 in Rizhao, a beatiful seaside city in Shandong province.
Professors and teachers there are tireless in teaching and the students have an insatiable desire to learn. Looking back on the years I have spent there, I am really thankful to her for enriching my knowledge and widening my view. What’s more, the scenery of spring there was very beautiful and the sakura and magnolia is in full blossom, welcome to my mother university and I am glad to be your guide. Thanks!
2. Why do you choose to study in our university?
Firstly, I like Nanjing very much. I’v been here twice as a tourist and I was deeply impressed by both the scenic spots and the friendly people here.
Secondly, I know that great Chinese modern educationists like Tao Xingzhi and Chen Heqin once gave lectures here. They made great contributions to our nation’s education and also set good examples for those who want to be a teacher in the future, such as me.
Most importantly, what attracts me most was the academic and scholarly atmosphere here. There are so many excellent professors and teachers who have strong research abilities that I would feel it a great honor to enjoy your teaching.
That’s why I choose to further my study here. Thank you!
Tao Xingzhi was a modern educationist.
In 1927, he founded the world-famous Morning Village (Xiaozhuang) Normal School, which was designed not only to train rural teachers in his philosophy, but also to become the center of all political, social and economic activities in an effort to renew the village itself. The experiment was a success, resulting in the improvement of production, living standards, education, economics and security.
He believed that school must be closely connected to society and that education is an active, constructive process in real-life experiences rather than one of telling and being told. Instead of “school as society,” Tao looked at “society as school”; instead of “education as life,” he saw “life as education’’; and, instead of “learning by doing,” he proposed “unity of teaching, learning, and reflective acting.” In 1937, he founded the renowned Yucai School.
Tao Xingzhi spent his whole life promoting mass education. His teaching slogan is that “educators can teach himself from teaching and obtain knowledge from his labor”.
Chen Heqin was a modern educationist and he is also the founder of children pedagogy in China.
After graduating from Columbia University, he return to China and began to give lessons in Nanjing Normal University.
In 1923, he founded Nanjing Gulou kingdergaten and carried on his experiment on early childhood education. His greatest contribution lies in the theory of “active education”, which consists of 3 main parts, they are the teleology(目的论), curriculum theory(课程论)and teaching methodology(教学论). He emphasizes that “one

should be a real man, be Chinese and be modern Chinese.””The nature and the society are both active textbooks” and “students should learn by doing”.
3. How are you benefited at your university? I do benefit a lot at my mother university.
Firstly, I feel appreciated to have good teachers who not only devoted themselves to teaching us knowledge but also made friends with us. Secondly, I feel fortunate to have several close friends on campus with whom I share my happiness and sorrows. Thirdly, the campus activities were so interesting that I often involve myself in them, which gave me wide room to develop the abilities of cooperation, competition and creativity. In a word, I do benefit a lot at my university.
4. Could you sum up your study habits in your university in a few points?
Thank you for your question. I think there are 3 points about my study habits.
Firstly, I live a regular life. At school days, I go to bed at 11pm and get up at 7am. This habit makes me energetic. Secondly, I study and work efficiently, do the most important things first and leave the rest if I have to. Thirdly, my heath is vital. I spend an hour jogging with friends every afternoon and this really makes me a healthy person.
5. Tell us something about your major in the university.
Thank you for your question. I major in English in my university and I took a great many courses, such as intensive reading, extensive reading, interpretation, teaching methodology and so on. Among all these courses, my favourite one is teaching methodology. Through this course, I began to learn how to be a qualified English teacher and fortunately I spent a month in my high school to do teaching practice. I indeed learned a lot from that experience, and I know clearly in order to be a professional English teacher I still have a long way to go. So I screwed up my courage and come here, I hope I can be lucky enough to be a graduate student here. Thank you!
6. Do you think a university education equals a successful future.
Thanks for your question. But I don’t really think so. Definitely, a university education is a basic requirement for us to compete in the society. But we should also realize that the knowledge we learn in university is mostly theoretical. Before we put it into practice, we will never know whether it will work or not. Therefore,it’s better to say that a university education is a precondition for a successful future. Thanks.
7. What is the most important skill you have acquired at college?
Thank you for your question. I think it’s the communication skill. We know that different people have different personalities, so how to get along with various kinds of people is really a great matter. Through the campus activities, I come into contact with different people, and I began to learn how to respect each other, how to reach agreements, how to make compromise and so on. I believe that no matter when you make contact with people, one should be kind, generous and always ready to offer help. That’s all, thank you so much.
8. Can you recall on exciting experience you have got at college?
Thank you for your question. I’d like to say something about my experience of being the director of the broadcasting station at college. When I was selected, I was really excited as my ability was recognized by my teachers and colleagues. Besides organizing large-scale campus activities, I propose to make adjustments in our program system. As a student in English major, I suggest having more creative English programs which would attract university students. For instance, the host can invite our American teacher and students aboard to have communicative talks through the radio and we can also advertise our programs through SNS, such as Xinlang

Weibo. I am glad to say our microblog has been marked with “V” and welcome all the teachers to search through the Internet and listen to the programs. All these successful attempts give me a sense of achievement and I really feel excited. Thank you.
9. What kind of personality do you think you have?
Thank you for your question. I’d like to say that I am a strong-minded girl. Once I set a goal, I will persist on it until I succeed. For example, when I was preparing for the postgraduate examination, I spare no effort to learn every subject well. Pedagogy itself is quite interesting, but the process of memorizing detailed concepts and theories can be a bit boring, but I keep telling myself that no pains no gains. And it’s quite clear the process of doing research on educational issues is much tougher than just memorizing the conclusions. So I believe I am a strong-minded girl. Thank you so much.
10. How are you getting along with your classmates or colleagues?
Thank you for your question. I get along with my friends well. Since we are far away from home, we care each other just like siblings. We share happiness and sorrows together and we offer all necessary help when someone is in trouble. But there are times when we can’t get along well. We may have disagreements even fierce argument, then I choose to stay alone for some time and have a deep talk with friends, then all clouds will drift away and our friendship is still in the sunshine. That’s all. Thank you.

Thank you for your question. I feel my strongest merit is that I am a
highly-organized girl. If
I take a job, I will search for useful information, make detailed plans and try my best to do it efficiently; if I get into trouble, I would calm down soon and try to solve the problem with my friends’ help. I never escape from my responsibility and I am used to make summary after work. Besides, I am organized in life. My room s always clean and everything is in the right position. I feel comfortable to live in such a neat environment.
12. What are your great weakness?
Thank you for your question. I was born as a
sensitive girl. I am sensitive to unknown conditions. So in
order to avoid helplessness, I will get to know the condition in advance. For example, this time I came to Nanjing alone, for fear of getting lost, I checked all the possible public transportation lines from the railway station to the hotel and from the hotel to our university. Luckily, everything goes well. Being born sensitive makes me more careful than others, sometimes this can be bad, so I will go on improving myself.
13. Do you call yourself a happy person?
Thank you for your question. I think I am a happy person. I like to see the bright side of things. Failure and depression happen to me sometimes. But I know feeling bad is no help to solve problems, so I will adjust myself to the best state quickly.
14.How do you feel about your achievement so far?
Thank you for your question. Generally speaking, I am satisfied with my performance in the past four years’ college life. As for academic study, I acquired much knowledge and I was granted the scholarship every semester. What’s more, I have acquired an aggressive learning attitude. I have a thirst for knowledge and I’m prepared to learn, I believe it will benefit for the rest of my life. Besides, through my work in the broadcasting station and the Student Union, I have accumulated precious experience of cooperation, coordination and communication. Last but

not least, I have gained some working experience from my part-time jobs. However, I know what I have learned is far from enough and I still have a very long way to go. This is also one reason why I want to further my education.

industrial city, Qilu Petrochemical Company, Xinhua Pharmaceutical Company and many other
large companies are all located there. It is also a famous
historic city, it used to be the capital of Qi during the spring and autumn and the
warring-states period. At that time, the most famous institution of higher education can be the Jixia Academy, and it was also located there. Many renowned scholars ,like Mengzi, Xunzi, Su qin, Zhang Yi and so on, had expressed their opinions there. Zibo is also known as the cradle of As for
cuju, which is regarded as the origin of modern football.
specialties, Zhoucun Sesame Seed Cake can rank the top. It is characterized as thin and crispy.
It’s a very delicious snack suitable for both the young and the old. Besides, Boshan Suguo and tofu box are also delicious dishes. I am proud to say that I can cook suguo on my own. Welcome to Zibo, dear professors!
16. Where do you prefer to live in, Nanjing or your hometown?
Thank you for your question. I prefer to live and work in Nanjing. As it is a modern city with more opportunities for self-development. Life here can be exciting and colorful. But when I grow older, if my parents don’t want to move here, I would go back to Zibo. They give me painstaking care when I was a child, then when they grow old, I should also accompany them.
17. Can you introduce your family to us?
Thank you for your question. There are four members in my family, my father, my mother, my sister and I. I love my niece, I love my family.
18. Which of your family members influence you most?
I think it’s my lovely niece. She is 2-year-old and very naive. She has a very regular life : go to bed at 10pm and get up at 8am every day, have milk before going to bed, drink yoghourt or fruit juice at 10am, go out and have fun with my mother every day, what a healthy lifestyle! Though we adults are very busy with either study or work, I think we should try our best to live a regular life and keep a healthy lifestyle.
19. How do you usually celebrate important family occasions?
We usually have dumplings for dinner. My mother used to live a pretty poor life and she says years ago people can only have dumplings on New Year’s Eve. Now life is much better, but her love for dumplings never changed. She not only like eating them, but also enjoy the process of making them. I helped her as a right-hand assistant. Every time she make dumplings, she would tell stories about the old age. I also enjoy the process.
20. What’s your favourite sport?
It’s jogging. I spend an hour jogging on the playground with two of my best friends every day. It’s a convention

I like three kinds of books in all. Firstly, I like books on education, such as “Good Parents Makes Good Children”written by Lu Qin, who is known as the agony aunt. This kind of books tells both teachers and parents how to treat your children properly; Secondly, I like autobiography. Recently, I read “Fiction and Fact” written by Rui Chenggang and “Being on sea, sail” written by Mengfei. Part of their words brings me positive energy. As a student in English major, I also like reading English novels. My favourite one is “Pride and Prejudice” written by Jane Austin. The story tells us that it’s wrong to get married just for fortune, money and social status, while it’s also foolish to discard all these factors. Reading makes me calm and sober in mind.
23. Who is your favourite singer?
It’s Celine Dion. “My heart will go on” is my favourite English song since I watched the movie“Titanic” in 1997. Her voice was so beautiful that I cannot help myself. In this year’s spring festival gala, Celine singed “jasmine” with famous folk song singer Song Zuying in both Chinese and English, I think their performance is terrific! They are so charming and elegant, I like their style.
24. What is your biggest problem in learning English?
Thank you for your question. I think the biggest problem lies in translation. Quite different from listening, speaking, reading and writing, translation needs more strategy and culture background. That’s what I am short of now. But I know that with excellent translation skills, one can be a better communicator. So besides memorizing vocabulary and doing oral practice, I keep reading books and watch English movies to get in touch with English culture. I hope I can improve myself gradually.
25. Why do you decide to major in English Methodology?
Thank you for your question. There are two main reasons. First of all, my mother and my sister are both language teachers, my mum teaches Chinese, and my sister teaches English, they cultivate my interest in language and I find I have a talent in learning English so when I choose my major, I choose English directly.

In a word, I am looking forward to make a solid foundation for my future profession after two years’ study here. Thank you.
27. Do you think planning a career for a young person is vital?
Sure. In order to avoid unemployment after graduation, one should decide what he or she wants to do in the future as early as possible. We cannot always rely on our parents, we should think independently.

28. What would you be doing in five years from now?
I have a trilogy in five years from now. For the first two years, I will try my best to finish my postgraduate education and develop my abilities in an all-round way. In this way I think I can be competent enough to find a satisfying job in the third year. When I am familiar with my position, I think I get married with my Mr. Right, though I haven’t met him now.
29. Qufu
Qufu is the hometown of Confucius and it has three world-famous attractions, they’re the Confucius Temple, the Confucius Mansion and the Confucius Cemetery.
Well, in the Confucius temple, the Hall of Great Achievements is considered to be the most impressive building. I feel to lucky to have a close contact with it in 2010 when I worked as an volunteer in the International Confucius Cultural Festival.
Besides these attractions, there are other scenic spots related to Confucius, such as the City of Six Arts. My graduation thesis happens to be related to the Six Arts City. More specifically, I searched the mistranslation in here. Before graduation, I hope I can contribute something to the small city to make it a more beautiful place.
30. Confucius
Confucius is one of the most famous Chinese people in the world. He is the founder of Confucianism and Confucius’ legacy lies in three aspects. I’d like to introduce them one by one.
Firstly, he compiled and preserved the literary works, The Six Classics, including Shi, Shu, Li, Yue, Yi and Chun Qiu.
Secondly, Confucius built up a system of philosophical thoughts with Ren as its basic virtue. Last but not least, Confucius established private schools, creating a scientific educational system.
In a word, his thoughts have exerted a deep influence on China and its people and we should respect such a master.
Great contributions on education:
As for the students, Confucius proposed that teachers should provide education for all people without discrimination. I totally agree with this point.
As for the purpose of education, Confucius proposed that after acquiring enough knowledge, one should be an official and contribute to the country. Obviously, it’s totally correct from our perspective of view. As for the contents, they’re the Six Classics. And they were used as textbooks for nearly a thousand years. As for methodology, Confucius proposed several useful methods, such as teaching students in accordance with their aptitude, .enlightening students, uniting learning, thinking and acting.
Confucius spent his whole life on education and he indeed set a good example for us who want to be a teacher in the future.
