Overview

The film ‘Shawshank Redemption’ is directed by Frank Darabont. The film is about Andy Dufresne, the main character, whose was treated unjustly had bend sent to Shawshank Prison. He is innocent, but lawyer did wrong to him. He got 2 life-sentences back to back which means he would stay at the dirty place for his whole life. But he did not just resign to fate; he tried to fight for his freedom; for the hope to escape. However, things always cannot predict.

Recommendation

I recommended this film to my 6 form ESOL reading club. There are 2 reasons why I recommended this film. First, this film used third person narration technique. This technique helped me understand the main character, also, this technique make the whole film is quiet; make guardians feel peaceful. Second, one of the themes about this film that is redemption drove me think a lot. In my opinion, everyone in this world needs redemption. This would help us to grow up and establish the value of the world.

Personal Response 1 I was pleased that Andy got hope. “there are ...places...in the world that aren't made out of stone,

There is something ...inside...that they can't get to...that is hope” Andy said. Maybe Red is right, as he said hope is a dangerous thing, especially for those prisoners who got 1 or

more life-sentence. They are not dead prisoner, so they have to live without hope inside the stone. But Andy didn’t, he got another attitude for his prison life which is ‘get busy living or get busy dying’. Andy had never live without his hope of freedom or alive. He thought hope could use his whole life to fight for. Andy digged a hole for his hope to escape for less than 20 years that red thought at least 600 years showed Andy had a strong desire to be free that never be extinguished. “Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies” Andy said to red. Andy always thought hope is a good thing, he never felt despair, even though the lawyer made him got 2

life-sentences back to back, even though he got 2 month to live in a hole as a response when he knew the truth. He believed that he could walk out the stone. As Red said, some birds aren't meant to be caged. Their feathers are just too bright. Andy did do escape from that darkness place to freedom world. Andy followed his hope, the darkness of the prison didn’t kill it, also he didn’t drop his desire to freedom because of the despair life.

Personal Response 2

I was shocked that institutionalization is so terrible. “These walls are kind of funny like that. First you hate them, and then you get used to them. Enough time passed, you get so you depend on them. That`s institutionalization” Red said. Brook lived in prison for 50 years, nearly whole life. I bet he tried to fight against the institutionalization, but he found fight against equal futile effort. Then he got used to the institutionalization and then he depended on it. All his body and his soul all institutionalized. The life story of Brooks made me feel terrible of the institutionalization. “Prison life consists of routine, and then mort routine” Red said. Prison life is boring. Same things went over and over again and

never stop. You never had your mind in that place, what you did is what the warden told you to do. The masses in the prison had been controlled by the rules, the warden and the guard. They head washed you, make get used to think as a salve. It is not hard to understand that everybody in the real life all get a similar character in the Shawshank Redemption. Most of us will be like Brooks, get institutionalized and then we depend on it, never try to fight against it again. Institutionalization never stops to institutionalize any people in the world, even though we are in the society.
