Ten years ago,I lived in a building in New York. The building next door was feet away from mine. There was a woman who lived there whom I had never met. I could see her seated by her window each afternoon, sewing or reading .

After several months had gone by. I began to notice that her window was dirty. Everything was unclear through the dirty window. I would say to myself ,“Why doesn’t that woman wash her window? It really looks terrible.”

One morning I decided to clean my apartment, including washing the window on the inside.

Late in the afternoon when I finished the cleaning, I sat down by the window with a cup of coffee for a rest. What a surprise! Across the way, the woman sitting by her window was very clear. Her window was clean!

Then, it dawned on me. I had been criticizing her dirty window, but all the time i was looking at hers through my own dirty window.

That was quite an important lesson for me. How often had I looked at and criticized others through the dirty window of my heart, through my own shortcomings?

Since then, whenever I wanted to judge someone, I asked myself first: \"Am I looking at him through my own dirty window?\" Then I try to clean the window of my own world so that I may see the world about me more clearly.

Sport is not only physically challenging ,but it can also be mentally challenging.Criticism from coaches, parents, and other teammates, as well as pressure to win can create an excessive amount of anxiety or stress for young athletes.

Stress can be physical emotional, or psychological, and research has indicated that it can lead to burnout. Burnout has been described as dropping or quitting of an activity that was at one time enjoyable.

The early years of development are critical years for learning about oneself. The sport setting is one where valuable experiences can take place. Young athletes can, for example, learn how to cooperate with others, make friends, and gain other social skills that will be used throughout their lives. Coaches and parents should be aware, at all times, that their feedback to youngsters can

greatly affect their children. Youngsters may take their parents' and coaches' criticisms to heart and find a flaw in themselves.Coaches and parents should also be cautious that youth sport participation does not become work for children. The outcome of the game should not be more important that the process of learning the sport and other life lessons.

In today's youth sport setting, young athletes may be worrying more about who will win instead of enjoying themselves and the sport. Following a game, many parents and coaches focus on the outcome and find fault with youngsters' performances. Positive reinforcement should be provided regardless of the outcome. Research indicated that positive reinforcement motivates and has a greater effect on learning than criticism. Again, criticism can create high levels of stress, which can lead to burnout.

36.________can create an excessive amount of anxiety or stress for young athletes. A.challenge and criticism B.success and failure

C.parents and coaches D.Reinforcement and experience

37.According to the passage sport is positive for young people in that_______. A. it can help them learn more about society B. it enables them to find flaws in themselves C. it can provide them with valuable experiences

D. it teaches them how to set realistic goals for themselves

38. Many coaches and parents are in the habit of criticizing young athletes ________. A. believing that criticism is beneficial for their early development B. without realizing criticism may destroy their self confidence C. so as to make them remember life’s lessons D. so as to put more pressure on them

39. According to the passage parents and coaches should ________. A. pay more attention to letting children enjoy sports B. help children to win every game

C. enable children to understand the positive aspect of sports D.train children to cope with stress

40. The author's purpose in writing the passage is ________. A. to persuade young children not to worry about criticism B. to teach young athletes how to avoid burnout

C. to stress the importance of positive reinforcement to children D. to discuss the skill of combining criticism with encouragement C

The first two stages in the development of civilized man were probably the invention of primitive weapons and the discovery of fire, although no body knows exactly when he acquired the use of the latter.

The origin of language is also difficult to understand. No doubt it began very gradually Animals have a few cries that serve as signals, but even the highest apes have not been found able to pronounce words, even with the most intensive professional instruction. The superior brain of man is apparently a necessity for the mastering of speech. When man became intelligent enough, we must su

ppose that he gradually increased the number of cries for different purposes. It was a great day when he discovered hat speech could be used forarrative. There are those who think in this respect picture language preceded oral language. A man could draw a picture on the wall of his cave to show in which direction he had gone, or what prey he hoped to catch. Probably picture language and oral language developed side by side. I prefer to think that language has been the most important single factor in the development of man.

Two important stages came not so long before the dawn of written history. The first was the domestication of animals; the second was agriculture. Agriculture was a step in human progress to which there was nothing comparable until our own machine age. Agriculture made possible an immense increase in the number of the human species in the regions where it could be successfully practiced. These were, at first, only those in which nature fertilized the soil after each harvest. Agriculture met with violent resistance from the pastoral nomads, but the agricultural way of life prevailed in the end because of the physical comforts it provided.

Another fundamental technical advance was writing, which, like spoken language, developed out of pictures, but as soon as it had reached a certain stage, it was possible to keep records and transmit information to people who were not present when the information was given.

These inventions and discoveries—fire, speech, weapons, domestic animals, agriculture, and writing—made the existence of civilized communities possible. From about 3000 B. C. until the beginning of the Industrial Revolution less than two hundred years ago there was no technical advance comparable to these. During this long period man had time to become accustomed to his technique, and to deveop the beliefs and political organizations appropriate to it There was, of course, an immense extension in the area of civilized life. At first it had been confined to the Nile, the Euphrates, the Tigris and the Indus, but at the end of the period in question it covered much the greater part of the inhabitable globe. I do not mean to suggest that there was no technical progress during this long time; there was progress—there were even two inventions of very great importance, namely gunpowder and the mariner’s compass—but neither of these can be compared in their power to such things as speech and writing and agriculture.

41. According to the above passage, we can conclude that ________.

A. the use of fire and the domestication of animals made agriculture possible B. progress was probably very slow when language first came into being C. gunpowder and the compass are as important as speech in history D. communication is the most important factor for human development 42. According to the article, agriculture ________. A. was accepted as soon as it appeared

B. is as great a step forward as our machine age C. helped improve the techniques of domestication D. at first helped make the land more suitable for crops 43. From the article we can learn that ________.

A. weapons and agriculture are what speech and physical comforts are based on B. the origin of the language can be clearly understood by studying apes’ behaviors C. the reason why animals have no language may be that they are not clever enough

D. the agricultural way of life helps a lot in the development of written language 44. Which is the right order of the appearance of the following things (a to e)? a. agriculture b. weapons

c. domestication of animals d. written language
